Interesting Places to Visit in Penang


Found near the Strait of Malacca, Penang is a tiny state in Malaysia that is also known as the Silicone Valley of Asia. It is composed of two parts - Seberang Perai and Penang Island. Although its land area may be small, it is still very progressive. This can be seen in the number of people that inhabit this small state. In fact it is the eighth most populous state in Malaysia.
Penang has become one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia because of its progressive capital and its beautiful white sand beaches. For this reason Penang properties have gone up in value. If you have never been to Penang here are a few of its most popular tourist attractions.
· Khoo Kongsi. This is a huge and elaborately designed Chinese clan house that marks the existence of the Chinese people in Penang. The Khoo Kongsi is the most impressive temple in Penang and this is why it's a famous tourist destination. This historic structure is found in the center of Cannon Square, George Town. Its granite paved square, rowhouses that date back to the 19th century and prehistoric war houses take you back to history making you feel like you've gone back in time.
· Kapitan Keling Mosque. This mosque was built by Indian-Muslim merchants way back in the 19th century. It can be found in Jalan Kapitan Keling and is the biggest mosque in Penang's capital. It was said to have been built by Caudeer Mohudeen, the leader of the Indian-Muslim community for which the mosque is named after. "Kapitan" comes from the English word "Captain" while "Keling" is a term that denotes Indians in general.
· Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram. This Thai Buddhist temple is most noted for is reclining Buddha statue. This is located in George Town, Penang and is the 3rd largest statue of its kind. Aside from the Reclining Buddha there are also numerous smaller shrines that depict Thai deities and other Buddhas. The temple was constructed way back in 1845 on land that was donated by Queen Victoria as an act of goodwill to enhance trading relations with the Thai's.
· Penang Hill. In the hot and bustling city of Penang there is a place where you can seek refuge from all the noise and cool off. This is Penang Hill - or more popularly known as Bukit Bendara. This hill resort is found in Air Itam - 6 km from the heart of the city. It is surrounded by trees and foliage making it the perfect getaway from city life.
