Some people have described the main beach in Pattaya as being the worst beach in the world. I think that's a little harsh and don't necessarily agree with that statement, but it is definitely one of the worst beaches in Thailand.
Thailand has some of the best beaches in the world. For example, some of the beaches on the island of Phuket are absolutely breathtaking, and if you visit them during the off-season, you will often have them all to yourself to some extent.

Furthermore if you visit some of the smaller islands off the coast of Thailand, you will find some even more beautiful beaches. In other words the kind of beaches that you might think of when dreaming about a holiday in paradise.
Unfortunately Pattaya beach cannot be described this way. For a start you will find that it is very small because there is not a lot of room between the main road and the sea. Therefore it can become packed between the peak months of December, January and February.
There is also the fact that the beach itself has now become dirty and polluted. This is a shame because many of the other beaches in Thailand are really clean.
Another problem that you face when you lounge around on this beach is that you will be constantly pestered with salesmen (and saleswomen) trying to sell you something. This is okay the first few times, but it can become really annoying after a while when you are being approached every few minutes. After all, many of us go to the beach to relax.
If you go to a lot of other beaches in Pattaya, this isn't as much of a problem, particularly if you avoid going during the most popular months of the year. On Pattaya beach, though, it tends to be a problem throughout the year.
With all that being said, it should be pointed out that Pattaya itself is still a great place to visit. It may have a seedy reputation, but it does have a lot of great shops, bars and restaurants as well as plenty of tourist attractions in and around this city.
If you feel let down by the main beach in Pattaya, I suggest you head a mile or two up the road to Jomtien, as the beach here is a little better. Otherwise I suggest you book a plane to Phuket or Krabi, for example, where you will encounter some of the best beaches in the world.
