My Anchorage Experience

During my three years of living in Anchorage Alaska I must say that it was a very safe city to live in for its size. Anchorage has everything that you need as for as necessities. Now as far as going to amusement parks, and clubs you may want to reconsider your options of living here. If you want to experience the city of Anchorage at its fullest you might have to leave the city to experience the real beauty of Alaska. When I lived in Anchorage Alaska it was the first time in my life that I have seen mountains, wildlife such as moose, and bears.

Being around the wildlife was the only drawback that I had with living in Anchorage. I was not used to being that close to nature like that. I must say that the people of Anchorage are some of the most generous people that I have ever met. Unlike the lower 48 they really appreciate having a job and will not take their actions out on you when they are having a bad day.

There are things that you can do in Anchorage but like I said earlier that you may have to leave the city to really take in the experience of Alaska. The type of things that tourist visit Alaska for is the fishing, hiking in the mountains, and sightseeing. Out of all of those things that I listed I enjoyed sightseeing more than anything.

There would be days when I would drive down the Seward highway and on to the Turnagain Arm just to take in the scenes of the Chugach Mountains. Some days I would pull over to the side of the road and take pictures of the beautiful mountains. I would also look through the periscopes to see if I could checkout a whale splashing in the river but unfortunately they would never be any around when I showed up.

There are also numerous cultures that resided in the city of Anchorage as well. I was very surprised that there were so many different races that called Anchorage home. As far as dining out there are a few restaurants that are pretty good such as Glacier Brew house, Romano's Italian Restaurant, and Moose's Tooth Pizza. If you are into eating out at chain restaurants such as Chili's, TGIF, and Applebee's they have those as well.

Romano's is Alaska's version of Olive Garden. But it is on a more expensive level than Olive Garden. It is also family owned and has been an Anchorage favorite for years. Just before I left Anchorage they had opened the first ever Olive Garden that the state of Alaska has ever had. It is going to be interesting to see if Romano's will lose some followers because of Olive Garden's popularity throughout the country.

When I was getting ready to move to Anchorage people would tell me things such as "You are going to either love Anchorage or you are going to hate it". To be honest with you those statements are true. If you remove the stereo type that Alaska receive from people living in the lower 48 then you will love living in Anchorage.

Orchestrating the Whales and the WhaleWatch Captain

I was visiting with my friend's mom, Linda. She had come over to tell me stories of my friend Jimmy, her son, who was in the military overseas. As we exchanged stories she began to ask me what I have been doing with my summer and I told her I was a whale watch captain. I told her I loved it and was having a great time showing people the whales of southeast Alaska. From that point we began telling whale watching stories and laughing and laughing until she told me this one. I told her that we had to share it with everyone and so here it is, most of it anyways. It gets too funny for the rest of it... for now.

It was a summer day in southeast Alaska and the humpback whales were hungry. They were lunge feeding all over the place. There wasn't much to do so I thought of getting closer to the whales. I went out to get a closer look in my skiff and dropped my hydrophone over the side of the boat so I could hear the whales talking and making sounds. I heard bubbles and then I heard the unmistakable stun scream of the alpha male, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. It was deafening. I knew the call meant that in a matter of seconds hungry humpback mouths with giant pink tongues would open and lunge to the surface falling on top of each other as they come out of the water and feast. I threw up my arms in anticipation and there they were. I motored back a bit to get out of the way and waited. The last of the seventeen tails disappeared under the water. Ten minutes later I was ready for the encore. EEEEEEEEE and I knew it was about to happen so I threw my arms up again in pure joy.

Unbeknownst to me, a sailboat had blown up behind me with a very excited crew. Harv and Marv had taken a few friends out for a photo safari. They watched as this woman threw up her hands time and again and with each raise of her arms, the whales surfaced. Later, they were having some refreshments at a local eatery. They laughed as they recounted the days great whale watching. And they were overheard saying, "there was this woman in a tiny skiff orchestrating the whales, it was amazing!!"

Well, I used to be a music teacher but I cannot take credit for any whales bubble feeding. It was a nice compliment though.

Anyways, I love all the stories of whale watching here. They range from a sailboat sinking from a breaching whale to people getting whale snot on them, oh, and how can I forget... and of course the umm, special doctor for males.

It can certainly be said that San Francisco has been a very important city in the growth of California and the west coast. There is a lot of history in the city. During the building of the transcontinental railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad operated out of San Francisco, providing one end of the railroad. Even today, there is a lot to do in the city. You'll find a vibrant night life, and plenty to do even during the day.

One thing to keep in mind if you want to live in San Francisco is the cost. This is not a cheap city to live in. If the average cost of living index in the United States is 100, the cost of living index in SF would be 199, so it is well above the average for the United States. Lot's of people look for apartments for rent in order to reduce their monthly living expense, but even the average 2 bedroom apartment for rent can range from $1,800 to well over $2,500 dollars a month.

The cost of living can be brought down a little bit if one chooses to live in one of the smaller towns around the Bay Area, such as Stockton or Modesto. Of course the commute can be a problem, depending on the traffic.

Driving in SF can certainly be a pain. There is a lot of traffic in the area, and during rush hour, traffic can slow to a crawl. The hills certainly are no picnic to drive on either. Fortunately, San Francisco and the Bay Area have an excellent transit system. Within the By area, there is a transit system that includes buses, trolleys, and the famous cable cars. For travel to outlying areas, there is the Cal Train commuter train, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART. Many of the houses and condos in the Bay area are close to several bus stops, as well as within walking distance of many food markets and restaurants.

If you like mild winters, and cool summers, then the climate here will suit you just fine. San Francisco has a very mild climate. The average high in the winters is about 57 degrees, making it a great place for those who do not like snow. However, the average high in the summer is only about 70 degrees, so the summers are not much warmer than the winters.

Even despite these drawbacks, San Francisco is a fascinating city. There are a lot of sights to see, including Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and Pier 39. If you're a wine lover, then you'll find the Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley not too far away. If you love good food, then you'll find it in San Francisco. The city has an incredible variety of restaurants to meet all tastes and all budgets.

Despite the drawbacks of living in San Francisco, the cost of living, the traffic, and the climate, it is still a great city to live. Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most incredible in the entire American National Park system. But because it's also one of the biggest (over a million acres!), a lot of folks wonder about the best way to see it.

Personally, I think Grand Canyon helicopters are the best choice. It's because a chopper can cover more ground in 60 minutes than you'd see in a week from the ground. There's a lot more to it than that, though.

Here are five tour tips that everyone should be aware of before booking a Grand Canyon helicopter flight:

1. Choose your rim. This is an easy decision because it depends on your starting point. You'll do the South Rim if you're starting out from a city in AZ, like Flagstaff, Phoenix, Sedona or Scottsdale. The West Rim will be in your sights if you're starting from Vegas. No choppers fly directly to the South Rim from Vegas, and there aren't any flights between the South and West Rims.

2. Pick a morning flight. Because the air is clearer and less turbulent, morning (between 7 a.m. and noon) flights are best for tours on Grand Canyon helicopters. Clearer air means better visibility. A morning flight is especially important during summer, when afternoons come with dust and smoke from forest fires that can make the air hazy. That being said, late afternoons are my second choice - the dust and smoke in the air can make a sunset flight an amazing experience.

3. If you're checking out the West Rim, consider a landing tour. Landing tours are only available at Grand Canyon West (the West Rim), so only Vegas travelers can take one. It's because federal regulations prohibit South Rim 'copters from flying below the level of the rim and landing on the bottom. The most popular landing tour is the one that lands on the canyon's bottom and comes with a festive champagne picnic. My personal favorite is the package that lands on the bottom, includes a float trip down the Colorado, and lands at the rim top so you can experience the amazing Skywalk.

4. Before booking, check the tour company's cancellation policy. Plans change, making it important to book with a company that offers a favorable cancellation policy. The best companies will refund 100% of your money if your flight is cancelled 24 hours before takeoff. They'll also return your money if all flights are grounded by bad weather and your tour can't be rescheduled. Tour brokers don't offer that type of protection, which is one reason I tell travelers to avoid using them.

5. Book ahead. Actually, this is one of my most useful tour tips. Helicopter rides sell out fast because they're so popular. Seats are limited because the aircraft can only take six people. I suggest booking your tour at least a week in advance of the date you want (two weeks is even better). It's true that some travelers have been able to get seats the day of their flight, but this is rare. Plus, with a same-day booking you'll pay as much as 50% more and probably end up with one of the least desirable flight times.

South Beach Miami - Where Sun and Sea Meet Fun and Festivities

If your arrival in Miami is via rental car, as ours was, you may find yourself precariously clutching hotel directions as you navigate the complex interstate/freeway system, scared to breathe at the wrong time for fear of missing an all important turn. To avoid the first holiday argument it may be wiser to taxi from the airport which of course will also eliminate parking costs and issues once your are in situ. Enjoy the scenery as your ride will take you past some beautiful waterways and homes of the rich and famous and if your timing is right there should be several cruise liners docked in port confirming this is clearly a preferred destination for holiday makers of all varieties.

This is Art Deco central with exquisite buildings side by side proudly holding hands like long lost friends of a bygone era. What our hotel room lacked in size it certainly compensated for with ambiance. From the marble stairs and door frames, the wrought iron railings and the funky interior decor this hotel did not disappoint. Sporting friendly, efficient staff and right in the hub of South Beach what else could you really wish for? Art Deco lovers would find this paradise personified as every building in this region is from the same time warp. Options abound from backpackers, the well appointed boutique hotel, up to the more sumptuous in hotel residing. As darkness descends these beautiful buildings take on another life with vibrant coloured lights highlighting stunning architecture, framed by palm trees everywhere you look.

One street away and opposite the beach is Ocean Drive. Jam packed full of restaurants, bars and a smattering of shops it's fun and vibrant and definitely the place to be. This is the land of Mojitos, Long Island Iced Tea and Cuban cuisine. The balmy temperatures and prolific palm trees enhance the atmosphere of fun and festivities and it would be fair to say that nowhere else will you see so many boobs and booties on display. There's the trim, tanned and terrific clad in the shortest of shorts and the tightest of tops strutting their stuff. This is clearly the world of chest enhancement as even the shop window mannikins sport a chest that really makes the displayed bikini look like the infamous incy, wincy, teenie, weenie model known for its polka dots. Undeterred are those carrying more rolls than a bakery, the larger real bootilicious girls that pour themselves into two sizes too small and let it all hang out with the rest. However, big or small it's a sight to behold.

A spectacular boardwalk runs the length of Ocean Drive and is a must for a morning walk. Laid out beautifully with wide concrete paths to cater for all activities and nicely appointed park areas dotted with palm trees it's the perfect start to the day before the heat really gets going. With one side meeting the sand and the start of the beach it has several outdoor shower facilities as well sand volley ball courts and outdoor exercise equipment for the bronzed and beautiful. If cycling is your preferred mode of transportation then you will love the boardwalk with its cycle stations. For a small fee you can insert your credit card and select a bicycle for as long as you wish, returning it when your fun is over. Whatever your passion you will be passed by cyclists, rollerbladers, joggers and those just having a stroll and soaking up the atmosphere.

From Miami port where you could see at least 5 cruise liners a day coming and going to all the way North as far as the eye can see stretches the fabulously groomed, white sands of South Beach. The attention to detail is just fantastic. It follows the line of the beautiful Art Deco region and merges with the glitz and glamour of Miami North and high rises of all shapes and sizes. If throwing your towel on the sand doesn't spin your wheels then renting a sun lounger and umbrella is an available option. For those wanting a little more beach luxury there are also double bed cabanas available. Everything has been thought out from the water sport options for the thrill seeking holiday makers down to the kiosks selling food and drink, sunglasses and suntan lotion. Crystal clear water glistening in the sun holds invitation all day long and complete with life guard stations makes this a beach to be enjoyed by all ages.

Like the exquisite buildings this area really takes on a new persona at nightfall. If you are not here to have fun then you really need not apply as this is fun city. Eating out has more options than a multi choice school exam and restaurant staff are upbeat and incredibly friendly. Clad in a mostly casual fashion due to the heat they do a great job touting for business in a hugely competitive market. Cabaret acts are dotted up and down the strip and give a Priscilla Queen of the Desert feel to an already ecliptic community.
