Culture and Customs of Kuala Lumpur

The Islamic capital is an open book of heritage and tradition, but still it has given room to many other religions and races to share its land. This multi-cultured city is a haven which has given shelter to a number of other religion people and have also given them decent living and job to lead a fulfilling life. Though many invaders have left their footprints here, its ethnicity never fades or gets diluted.

Most of the natives here adhere to Islamic religion, as Kuala Lumpur is basically a Muslim city. Though the locals (Malays) are Muslims, you can find residents of other communities like Chinese and Indians in a large figure.

Malays dominate the majority of population. Formerly, the natives were fishermen, farmers and weavers, but now due to technology and economy development most of them have changed their profession. Malaysians are always known for the hospitable behaviour - bowing head is an example to specify.

Followed by the ethnic Malay groups, there are Chinese who rank 2 in the Malaysian population. There are a number of Chinese restaurants, steak houses and stores in KL. Chinatown shopping and eating area is absolutely a famous one. Indians are ranking next to that of Chinese. And as a proof for this, you can come across a number of South Indian banana leaf restaurants, tea houses, Little India shopping place and Indian costume designing shops in the city.

There lives another group of people called the Orang Asli. This community lives in Malaysia for more than thousand years, and are the origins to make their living first. Though they are found in less numbers, their tradition is known in every nook and corner of the country.

All different cultures bind to form a united nation, which welcomes every one with a red carpet. Malaysia is known for its hospitality, you can experience this in all the restaurants, hotels like the Hotel Kuala Lumpur - Piccolo Hotel and in other public spots.

Custom is given a great importance in all Asian cities, especially Kuala Lumpur is known for the authentic customs. 'Be a Roman when you are in Rome', dress appropriate to avoid unwanted attention. Women should dress up properly and should cover their heads and shoulders while entering a religious site. No short skirt are allowed in public gatherings. No bikinis outside the beach area. Men wear suit and long full pants, but short ones are allowed in tourist areas. These custom tips will also be useful while you are touring the city.
