Jakarta City Travel Guide: Exploring The Beauty of Indonesian Capital

Urban Adventure Tours

Jakarta is the beautiful capital of the Southeast Asian country, Indonesia. Being an archipelago of more than 18,000 islands, the nation is filled and overflowing with the most wonderful sights and experiences. Its capital alone holds enough things to do to last an entire month of walking around the city without pause, and still not being able to explore every nook and cranny. It is so full of different types of attractions to visit, and is very rich in historical and cultural heritage. To help you wander through this wonderful place, here's a mini Jakarta travel guide.
Seeing Jakarta's History: The Old Town
The best place to go to for a look at what Jakarta was in the old days is definitely Jakarta Old Town, or Old Town Batavia, an area formally stated as heritage in 1969. Even European travelers and voyagers as early as the 16th century saw the beauty of the place and called it "Jewel of Asia" and "Queen of the East".
In Old Town Batavia, history is brought back to life with the magnificent and picturesque scenery of old colonial Dutch architecture and surroundings. The streets are lined with museums and other interesting tourist attractions. Some of these are Gedung Arsip Nasional, Cafe Batavia, Postal Office, Museum Bank Indonesia, and the Museum Fatahillah.
Other than the many buildings you can freely walk into, you can also see many street vendors and open markets in the area. Visit the old drawbridge, Sunda Kelapa old harbor, and delight yourself in the old Javanese leather puppets at the Puppet Museum.
Every Monday, most of the museums in Jakarta are closed. The best day to visit is on Sunday, because usually there would be a puppet show at the Puppet Museum. At the same museum, you can also see the funeral of Jan Pieterszoon Coen. He was an officer of the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia (VOC) in the early 17th century who renamed the city into Batavia from its older name, Jayakarta.
Immersing Yourself in Indonesia's Culture: Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) is literally translated to English as Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park. This large 250 acre park, located in the area of East Jakarta, is indeed one of the most beautiful and perfect places to feel like you're actively participating in the culture of the beautiful Indonesia.
An hour is not enough to witness everything you need to experience in this colossal park, as it is a conglomeration of everything Indonesian. The entire archipelago is crammed into the place, and the best thing to do is to let yourself be swept away by the sheer magnificence of experiencing all you can of the country in the shortest time possible. If you take a cable car inside the park, you will see the beautiful of Indonesian archipelago miniature in the middle of a lake.
Encyclopedia Britannica dubs TMII as a living museum, because of all the culture you can get from the entire experience. Each of the 34 provinces of Indonesia are represented in the park as pavilions. Each of them have their own unique surroundings, furniture, and ornaments to give the true feel of the territory. There are also more informative and fascinating museums that you can visit while inside the park, such as the Reptile Museum where you can see a dragon Komodo, Military Museum, Indonesian Museum, etc. You can also walk around and enjoy the calm beauty of the different sub-parks and have fun at the recreational facilities.
The best day to visit TMII is on Sunday, because the pavilions in the park usually perform their traditional dances and shows only on Sunday or public holiday.
Visiting the National Landmark of Jakarta: Monas
And of course, your stay in Jakarta would not be complete without seeing the monument built to remember the day Indonesia became a free country: the Monas, stand for Monumen Nasional. It was built by the first President, Mr. Soekarno, in 1961 and opened to the public ten years later. In Soekarno era, it was the highest building, the 132-meter monument powerfully tower high over Jakarta, a visible testament to the fight for freedom from colonial rule.
When you go there, you can reach the top of the Monas via elevator and see all of Jakarta. Afterwards, you can visit the Independence Room, which holds the national flag as well as other important artifacts. At the base of the Monas is the National History Museum, and the surrounding area is a beautiful park named Merdeka square. In the museum, you will find 51 dioramas telling the story about Indonesia's struggle for independence.
Sunday and holiday are not best days to visit Monas if you want to reach the top, because there are many students and people want to reach the top causing a long queue. There is only one lift with maximum 11 persons maximum capacity while hundreds of people want to enter the lift every holiday.
The above destinations are easy to reach, but many people in Jakarta cannot speak English. That is why you need an English speaking driver or a tour guide. This Jakarta Tourist Guide can help you reach the best destinations in Jakarta and explore more about the beauty of the city.
Visit here if you want to see some beautiful pictures of the city.

Other festivals are also celebrated, particularly during spring and autumn.

Bali Tour: The Hot Spots

With its beautiful islands dotted with pristine beaches, Bali is indeed a stunning destination, one with a charm that will never grow old, full of exotic splendor as much as it is filled with the pampering of modern-day amenities. This mainly is the reason why a Bali tour package is one of the most favorite among travelers from around the world.
To have the best experience from your Bali tour, the following hot spots are suggested:
Ubud
Ubud is renowned as the center for Balinese painting, being home to "Purl Lukisan", a museum that features a permanent collection of modern Balinese art dating from the turn of the century. Apart from Purl Lukisan, a number of art galleries as well as homes of artists thrive here, such as that of Antonio Blanco, an American, as well as Dutchborn Hans Snel. Another museum called Neka Museum features an expansive collection of paintings of Indonesian artists as well as foreign artists who used to live in Bali. Balinese painting today thrives on the "Young artist" style, which was introduced by the Dutch artist Arie Smith. Apart from that, Balinese artists have also been inspired by other foreign artist to adopt western techniques.
Kuta
A thriving resort that is popular primarily among the younger generation, Kuta is formerly just a lonely village. Nowadays, however, it has become a popular beach for surfing, although not so popular for swimming due to the particularly strong currents. It is also characterized by beautiful sunsets, as it is facing the west. Accommodation can be had both from international hotels and homestays. Modern establishments also abound, including restaurants, shops, discos, and other tourist facilities.
Nusa Dua
Located along the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali, Nusa Dua is famous for its clean, breathtaking white beaches and clear waters. The northern side of the peninsula offers gentle surf, while a bigger surf can be had at the southern side. The resort is accessible by taxi, and accommodations are offered by a number of hotels, some of which are among the most beautiful and luxurious in Bali.
Pura Besakih
Gently seated on the sprawling slopes of Mount Agung is the sanctuary of Besakih, which is considered as the holiest of all Balinese temples. It is also the biggest to date. It is also renowned as the mother temple of Bali, and has an illustrious past, being a thousand years old. Balinese people consider a visit to the temple as a special pilgrimage. The sight of the temple against a background of the mountain is a magnificent view, more so during festivals when banners add a touch of colour and gaiety to the natural scene.
Tanah Lot
Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most important sea temples. Built on top of a huge rock surrounded by the sea, the temple traces its beginnings from the 16th century, having built by a priest that have come to Bali from Java. The temple specially pays homage to the guardians of the sea, and local tradition considers the poisonous sea snakes found at the base of the rock island as temple guardians that protect it from both intruders and evil spirits. During the late afternoons, the temple is in silhouette, giving a magnificent, picturesque view.
Apart from the hot spots given above, Bali has of course other destinations that will make any traveler always on the verge of discovery. That is so because a Bali tour package, indeed, is something that will always claim a special space in a traveler's most treasured moments.

Five Stunning Places to Make You Fall in Love With China

In my time in China I have been privileged to visit countless places of beauty and cultural interest. Here are my five most stunning places that i have been to in the Middle Kingdom.
Beijing by Bike in Beijing 1. The Summit of Emei Shan. Sichuan province
Emei Shan is a mountain is Sichuan province and one of the four sacred holy mountains of China. The climb is over a series of dominating peaks and there is a 40km short route, or a 60 km long route, both of which involve trekking through dense mountain forest paths and endless stone steps, along with not so friendly monkeys that ambush you on bridges in attempt to steal any food and drink exposed on your person. Along the way are numerous Buddhist monasteries and temples and the solitude given from the remote location makes there something extremely spiritual about this place. After one or two long days hike to the summit base camp. There is a further 2 hour ascent up stone steps or a cable car that enables you to short cut this final step to the summit. Once arriving at the very top after all that hard work. The sunrise rising over the serene sea of clouds below you leaves you silent. All the effort of getting to the top suddenly becomes obviously worthwhile.
2. The stunning Li River, Guilin to Yangshuo, Guanxi province.
According to an old Chinese proverb Guilin scenery is the best in the world, and Yangshuo scenery is the best in Guilin. The Limestone Karst landscape creates an unparalleled scene of triangular shaped sharp peaks rising up from the ground and reflecting the sun into the clear river water. The small rafts that you can take typically last 4 hours and during this time you can relax and swim in the pristine river. Such a place for any natural world lover is an absolute paradise and is some of the most photogenic scenery in the entire world.
3. The mountain ascent of Hua Shan, Shanxi province.
'Splendid Mountain'. Close by the old capital of Xian and the Terracotta army is famous for its dangerous looking chain walkways and 2km sheer drops. The mountain has 4 peaks, a North, East, South and Western peak and in the four are connected by a complex multitude of different mountain paths, making it easy to lose your way on the trail. Along the wider, better travelled stretches of mountain paths and steps you will see endless padlocks and red bands symbolising good luck and prosperity. Many of the smaller paths are surrounded by sudden drops and Chains are anchored into the rock to prevent you from falling to the bottom. On one stretch of the mountain there is just a 30cm outcrop with no chain posts. I love Hua Shan because this mountain gives you a feel for the insignificance of man and the great power of nature, along with some stunning views from the peaks.
4. The Great Wall of China, Beijing.
The place everyone knows, it wasn't until 9 months after I started teaching English in China that I finally went to see for myself the great wall. Take the time and pay a little extra to go to a less touristy spot. The wall stretching across endless mountains makes it hard to believe that building such a thing is within human capability. Although the recreated and renovated tourist stretches are great for showing what the wall looked like at its peak, I believe it is important to see the real, actual wall which was standing there at the time of the Invading Mongolian tribes obstructing their path and protecting China. Travelling further West from Beijing to as far as Xian there are numerous stretches of original, old wall, in some places now barely visible. Seeing both old and new gives you and appreciation for the history and reasons behind this great world structure.
5. The Giant Pandas, Chengdu, Sichuan province.
The Giant Panda is such a beautiful creature and that they are almost impossible to see in the wild. Sichuan province's provincial capital Chengdu is home to the only Giant Panda breeding research centre in the world, inexpensive to enter and home to a large number of both giant and red pandas, it is no surprise that this station is so popular. The first time you peak around the corner of the simulated natural bamboo forest enclosure to see these cute gentle giants is enough to captivate any traveller.
All these places have been visited during my time in China. My site http://www.Chinatefler.com contains everything about teaching, living and travelling in China.

Things to Do in Bali

Visiting Bali

Many people are familiar with Bali that is located in Indonesia. People are already familiar with its unique culture, its heritage and the variety of things that can be done there. This does not mean though that people have already gone there. A lot of people plan but their plans are usually overshadowed because there are other countries, options that are considered and chosen instead. For those who still do not realize the beauty of Bali, you should know that there are a lot of things that can be done there with any of the available Bali tour package. All you need to do is plan what you want to do and you will be able to achieve more.
More Than Just Beaches
A lot of tourists think that Bali does not offer anything aside from its wonderful beaches. The traditional beach bum may want to see it just to see the difference that it has with other countries but the truth is that Bali has spots and attractions that are beyond what is expected. The rich culture of Bali is always apparent and this is one thing that makes the whole place different from any other place that you will see on earth.
Biking In Bali
Like mentioned earlier, there are still other things that can be seen beyond Bali. You may be surprised to know that you can actually bike around there. The best biking spot in Bali is in Ubud. There are some people who would want to take the bike around the streets so that they can check out different attractions there. Aside from biking, you may also want to try out climbing Mt. Batur. This is usually available through availing package tours that you can purchase and register for on the Internet even before you arrive in Bali.
Water Sports and Night Life
There is a variety of water sports that you can try. If you have always wanted to try surfing, you can probably achieve that when you go to Bali. There are some spots that are considered better for surfing though so it will be best to research ahead of time so that you know exactly where you would need to go. Kuta is usually the recommended spot for surfing. Aside from that, the night life in this place is always kicking. This is where you will find all the nice things about beaches and partying. You will surely enjoy Kuta if you are into those kinds of things.
Diving In Bali
If staying above water is not really your thing, you may want to go under the water and experience seeing life under the sea. Menjangan Island is known to be a spot where not a lot of people go to because it is a bit secluded and not very appealing to people who go to Bali to party. This fact makes it perfect for snorkelling. Trying this out will expose you to the beauty of the sea underneath the surface. Do remember that it may take hours before you arrive at this place from Bali but when you are there, you will realize that it is all worth it.

Chinese New Year in Singapore - Things You Shouldn't Miss!

The largest festival of the most populous country in the world, Chinese New Year is celebrated widely in its home country and by expatriated communities in San Francisco, London, Johannesburg and every other major city in the world, but few places celebrate as grandly as Singapore. New Year is therefore a very big deal here and the city is lined with street parties and acrobats entertaining the crowds, whilst hawkers sell phenomenal traditional street food designed to sate the appetite. It is also one of the most colourful festivals in the world with a multitude of hanging paper lanterns creating an otherworldly atmosphere and the inevitable illuminated dragons dance through the crowds. It is an event that feels uniquely Asian.
Customized and unforgettable luxury tours in Asia

As is appropriate for a festival that was started to celebrate a successful harvest, food plays a very important role; a special meat porridge is eaten in the weeks preceding and a pineapple tart called "Ong Lai", which symbolizes good luck, is eaten on the day. This is accompanied by peanut cookies representing longevity and a feast which also features many classic Chinese dishes. The tradition of "Lo Hei" is celebrated in the days after where a fish salad is tossed into the air, with many believing that the higher you throw the salad the more prosperity and luck will come your way. Best to watch from a safe distance!
One of the many traditions of Chinese New Year is to cleanse your home and rid it of the ghosts of the past year. Many houses spring clean before painting the doors and windows a bright nationalistic red that wards off future demons. It is clearly evident that the refreshing quality that New Year possesses for many Chinese is highly symbolic as the masses appear in new dresses, suits and other formal garments. Whereas in the West much of the tradition has gone from New Year, replaced with excessive drinking and partying, the Chinese have successfully modernized the festival whilst retaining core elements to be passed on to future generations.
The highlight in Singapore is undoubtedly a remarkable fireworks display that takes place over Chinatown. As expected from the nation that invented gunpowder, the show is amazing and brings out the best of the famous Singapore skyline. One of the best places to view the proceedings at a safe distance is from Marina Bay, where the rush to get access to the famous rooftop bar almost matches that for the street food below.
If you are lucky enough to be in Singapore for this incredible festival, be sure to dive in and savour the many experiences on offer as there are few places in the world with this volume of traditional music, dancing and authentic culture in an easily accessible environment. All elements of Singaporean society take part and the multicultural atmosphere is far removed from the repetitive alcohol-fuelled celebrations of elsewhere. A heady celebration in one of the best cities in the world.
We booked for Singapore through Islandesia.com a new portal for Asian travel.

Taiwan, an island off the southeastern point of China, is about the size of the USA states Maryland and Delaware combined. It consists of mostly rugged terrain, but also has a few gently rolling plains, located in the west of the country. The climate generally has a constant cloudiness, but don't let that stop you from visiting! Taiwan offers many sites to see on its beautiful island.
Taipei
As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei is the cultural hearth and economic center of the entire island. Visitors can find this city in the northern part of the island. Taipei houses the National Palace Museum, one of the largest museums of Chinese artifacts and artworks in the world. If a tourist wants to start their trip off right, they can start in Taipei because the rest of the island is connected to this city by means of railways, airports and bus lines!
Sports
For all those lovers of sports, the national sport of Taiwan is baseball. Even some of the players from Taiwan go on to play in the Major Leagues in the United States. You can always guarantee catching a game if you visit.

Affordable Hotels in Singapore

Customized and unforgettable luxury tours in Asia

From a budget traveler's perspective, planning your itinerary can be a hassle more often than not. You tend to grapple with the worry of not getting the most out of your stay especially when you are bounded by limited money and time.
You might chance upon a relatively cheap and seemingly decent hotel but fear soon sets in that you might also be compromising on accessibility and finding yourself staying too far from the "complete experience" you yearn to achieve from your shoestring stay.
To make the process painless for you, we have recommended a few cheap hotels in Singapore that come with the most convenient accessibility to "must-visit" places and landmarks.
Singapore's hottest tourist attractions are spread out mainly in the central and southern regions of Singapore. Glitzy Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay are located in the center of Singapore, whereas Resorts World Sentosa is on the southern part of Singapore at HarbourFront. To be staying in between both locations would be ideal as it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes to get to both destinations via public transport and at the same time, experience the hustle and bustle of the city.
The first on our list is the 5footway Inn Project which has 4 hotels in the districts of Chinatown, Arab Street and a flagship outlet in Boat Quay. The hotel chain strikes a stark resemblance to a cozy student hostel with offerings of private and mixed dorms and a chill out terrace. The most convenient outlet is in Chinatown which is a minute's walk away from Chinatown (NE4) MRT train station. Winner of past accolades such as Best Cleanliness in 2012 by HostelBookers and a recent certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor, 5footway Inn Project seems poised to become the model hostel since it's opening in 2011. After you have checked in, be sure to check out the sights and sounds surrounding the Chinatown district long the main Eu Tong Sen Street. In Chinatown, you could also check into the budget Econ Inn @ Chinatown on 18 Mosque Street which offers very basic amenities.
Bugis, a district in central area of Singapore is also dotted with budget hotels such as the Ibis Hotel Singapore on Bencoolen under the famous Accor Hotel Group. This economy-tier hotel is just 10 minutes walk away from Bugis (EW12) MRT train station. While Bugis is undoubtedly one of Singapore's most fashionable shopping districts for the younger crowd, it is also well-known for steamboat buffet joints. Just head down to Liang Seah Street where rows of cheap steamboat buffet cafes are lined up for your pickings.
Customized and unforgettable cycling tours in AsiaIn Little India district, one should check out the Santa Grand Hotel Little India which is one of the rare few cheap hotels in Singapore that offers surprisingly spacious rooms. Housed in a traditional 3-storey shophouse, Santa Grand Little India offers guests a choice of standard rooms to large family rooms. A famous hang out spot for locals during the weekends, Little India can seem to be unlike anywhere else in Singapore especially with Singapore's only 24-hour shopping mall called Mustafa Center.
More information on cheap hotels in Singapore can be found at http://www.budgethotels.sg
Let Danny Lee who is the founder of BudgetHotels.sg ( http://www.budgethotels.sg ) and also a tourism expert of Singapore show you where to get cheap hotel rooms. He is a local-bred that knows this tiny yet dynamic city-state inside out and can also share with you on where are the hidden gems to eat, shop and play.

Hellfire Pass and Reflections on Survival

Customized and unforgettable luxury tours in Asia

Visiting the Hellfire Pass Memorial in Kancharaburi, Thailand, is a moving experience. It also got me thinking about the art of survival.
The Memorial commemorates the sacrifices of those Allied Prisoners of War (POWs) and Asian forced labored who suffered and died on the Burma-thailand railway from 1942-1945. The story is immortalized in the film "Bridge over the River Kwai" starring Alec Guinness and Bill Holden.
In mid-1942 Japanese forces were fighting the British in Burma, their ultimate aim being an offensive against India. To maintain their armies in Burma, Japan needed secure supply routes and decided to construct a railway to connect Burma to Thailand. Work on the line began in both Burma and Thailand in October 1942 and the two ends were joined 14 months later. This was an incredible engineering achievement - the railway was 415 kilometers long and went through inhospitable jungle and mountains; and the tools were primitive.
Customized and unforgettable cycling tours in AsiaBut the cost - in human terms - was very high. The multinational workforce assembled by the Japanese of approximately 270,000 Asian labourers and over 60,000 Australian, British, Dutch and American POWs suffered horrific privations, including hunger and torture, while working punishing hours round the clock against the deadline. The flickering bonfire on the emancipated workers gave the place its name - Hellfire Pass. Some 30 per cent of the Asian labour force and 20 per cent of the POWs died during the construction of the railway.
The Memorial, comprising a museum, walking trail and information center, has been developed and preserved as a historic site. It came about from the inspiration of an Australian POW and funding was provided by the Australian government.
Why do some survive and others don't?
It would be reasonable to say that survival depends on luck and one's constitution - mental and physical. But learning about the POWs constructing the Burma-Thailand railway made me aware of another attribute which helps with survival. That attribute is mutual support. Despite their desperate plight, the POWs had team work; they were better organized than the Asian labourers and their survival rate was better. Among the POWs the Australians had possibly the strongest system of mutual support. As a result, their survival rate was higher than other groups.
The Australian sense of mutual support is charmingly reflected in the poem "Mates" written by Duncan Butler, an Australian survivor of Hellfire Pass. The following is an extract of two verses from a longer poem.
I've travelled down some lonely roads
Both crooked tracks and straight
An' I've learned life's noblest creed
Summed up in one word - "Mate".
My mind goes back to '42
To slavery and 'ate
When Man's one chance to stay alive
Depends on 'is Mate.

A Visit to Penang Island, Malaysia

Customized and unforgettable luxury tours in Asia
Malaysia is a slow burner. It is not the first place that springs to mind for many a traveler to South-East Asia but it may well surprise you, with few places worthy of more attention than Penang lying to the North West of the country.
Peninsular Malaysia is blessed with many islands that contain beautiful beaches, tropical lush jungles and a multicultural mix. Few, however, are as fascinating as Penang, particularly if you like to eat.
Here are my top five must-do things in beautiful Penang:
5. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
Everyone loves a rags-to-riches story. Born penniless in China, Cheong Fatt Tze moved to Penang as a teenager and quickly became a central force in local (and eventually) international trade. The bright indigo-blue colour of the exterior walls make this mansion stand out from the crowd and for the ultimate nouveau-riche experience you can also stay in the boutique hotel inside. Close to the Upper Penang road, a very popular nightspot.

Fringed by coconut palms and semi-dilapidated shacks that face onto the glorious Andaman Sea, Batu Ferrenghi is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Malaysia. And it is not a secret as tourists and locals alike flock here in their droves. Surrounded by plush bungalows and tasteful resorts, the beach lies on the north of the island and is well catered for by restaurants and bars.
3. Visit the Clan Jetties
Much of the recent history of Penang is dominated by talk of the clan families that helped to expand its industry. Each jetty was conducted and lived on by one of seven clans who still reside here today, well over 100 years later. The stilt houses and slender walkways that hang over the Malacca Strait are a fascinating insight into the significant Chinese history of the area. Be sure to be respectful of the inhabitants, this is their home after all!
2. Enjoying Hawker food
I'll say this in the simplest possible terms. Malaysian food is the most underrated cuisine in the world. Distinctive but with recognizable elements from Indian, Thai and Chinese foods, it is unfathomable to me that they are all so popular the world over and yet Malaysian cuisine is not. The stalls along Chulia Street change between day and night with an ever rotating cast of grilled meats, dim sum, Nonya curry and noodle dishes. Try the Char Kuey Teow for a real unique treat.
1. Take a rickshaw ride around sleepy Georgetown
There are few more romantic things to do in all of Asia than to take a ride through the crumbling streets of Georgetown, the cultural heart of the island. Georgetown was once the colonial centre for commerce due to its location close to the docks, a history that is still visible through the street names. Care for a ride down 'Love Lane' anyone?
We booked our stay through Islandesia, a new and vital hub for those looking to travel to Asia.

4 Topmost 'Haunted' Locations in Singapore

A number of people seem interested in the paranormal activities that go around at 'haunted places' of Singapore. Daredevils, who book tickets aboard Singapore flights, look to incorporate such attractions in their schedule. Singapore is a highly modernised country and not many associate 'ghosts' and ghostly stories with such an urbanised tourist hub. Yet, there are a number of spooky tales that make rounds in this country of several modern marvels. While it is up to individuals whether they agree to believe such stories or not, the haunted spots of Singapore have surely tempted enough daredevils to book cheap flights ticket and land here! Let us explore few such haunts that appeal to thrill-seeking youngsters booking tickets aboard Singapore flights!
Hillview Mansion
Hillview Mansion, located at a top of Hillview Hill, is quite a popular attraction among those dare devils who book air tickets for flights to the country in a bid to explore the supernatural. The legend goes that the owner of the place was killed in a fire and thereafter any effort of renovating the house was thwarted by the evil spirit lingering in the house!! There is not much to look at here, given the fact that the private mansion was demolished in 2004 but the debris and desolation only elevates the eerie factor of the spot.
Old Changi Hospital
Hospitals are the usual suspects when it comes to providing the fodder to the rumour mills that churn out the ghost tales! In Singapore too, not many ghost-seeking adventurers would like to miss out on the Old Changi Hospital after getting hold of tickets on flights to the island state. Built in 1935 as a British military hospital, it was taken over by the Japanese in WWII. As per locals, screams are heard and shadows are seen at certain wards, the ones believed to be used as torture chambers by the Japanese. It has been abandoned for long now.
View Road Hospital
View Road Hospital is another one that finds a mention in the sightseeing schedule of thrill-seekers reserving tickets on Singapore bound flights. It was a mental sanatorium that was closed in 2001. It is said that mental patients were trapped here and even after their deaths, the spirits were not able to escape from the building.
Bukit Brown
Where else will you find ghosts if not cemeteries!! While it may not be the best of attractions for the fun seeking family holiday makers in Singapore, for those who love the bone-chilling experience of exploring the unexplored it makes sense to grab tickets, get on Singapore flights and plan a visit to Bukit Brown, a Chinese burial place. There have been reported sightings of phantoms hiding in the trees here and sometimes the most sinister of laughs break the screaming silence of the cemetery at nights! Surely, the place has all the right ingredients to tempt the brave souls.

Bangkok - The Different Types of Tours

Bangkok, Thailand, the city with many ups, downs and beautiful scenery, has so much to offer travelers and residents alike. With history that dates back centuries and the present-day revival, Bangkok can only be fully experienced in one way - a visit! Let's take a look at some of the features and tours Bangkok has to offer.
Need to Know Facts
The best time to visit Bangkok is between November and February. This is when the temperatures are comfortable, but the local beaches tend to be crowded. Monsoon season is not in effect, so flooding is not as big of an issue.
Residents speak the native language of Thai but many tourist areas offer English speakers that can help foreigners out. Bus drivers and taxi drivers tend to be less fluent in English, but there usually is someone nearby to help sort out any discrepancies.
Tours
If you are pressed for time, there are many tours that offer the ability to see the city and see it fast! You can catch public tours where you would be touring with groups of people, or there are private tours that you can set up to see the sites with only your party.
Bicycle tours are a great way to see the sites of the city without leaving land. Some of these tours see the neighborhoods of Bangkok while others offer views of the lush tropical forests surrounding the city. Bring comfortable shoes cause you'll be pedaling over many hills and bridges.
For those who would like to venture off the land, boat tours are available, and they come in many different forms. Taking a paddle canoe can get you into the tight spots that large dinner boats cannot travel. Areas that you may see from the water can consist of the popular "Venice of the East," an area that has long been under seen due to the increase in motor vehicle traveling around the city. Temples and trading houses are also popular sites along the river and can lead to hint on how the past was lived from the waterside.
Boat tours are very well known around Thailand. This is attributed to the fact that Thai people consider themselves jôw nám (water lords). If you are a couple in the area, the perfect romantic getaway on the water would be to take a dinner cruise. This allows for you to see the sites and also get a beautiful Thai meal served to you!
If you are old-fashioned, there are many walking tours offered around Bangkok that will suit your needs. Ranging from long to short, walking tours can be completely customizable or you can join a group to get the detailed walking tour.
Any way you look at it, Bangkok offers tours to quench your thirst, whether you are a walker, biker, or a boat rider. Step into the magnificent city that is Bangkok and take the time to learn and explore the culture and history of the ancient city that has marveled people for centuries!

Celebrating Mid Autumn Festival in Hong Kong

Mid Autumn festival is one of the most important festivals on the Chinese calendar. It occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. In western terms, this date usually lies at the end of September or early October and is the day the moon is closest to the earth.
Mid Autumn festival is a legendary fairytale, modern day moon appreciation, eating mooncakes and an opportunity for children to play with candle lit lanterns.
A legendary tragic love story of one's lover who is eternally trapped on the moon has turned moon worship into eastern version of thanks giving.
Traditional mid autumn festival candle lit lanterns are in a shape of rabbit or starfruit. These days, you will find lanterns in all shapes and sizes. Lanterns shaped as airplanes, helicopters, cartoon characters are popular. For the young ones, battery operated lanterns with tacky music are also available.
A mid autumn kid's gift basket might include lantern, binoculars for moon viewing accompanied by an astrology set. On the eve of mid autumn festival, you will find a sea of children with candle lit lanterns at Victoria Park.
Mooncake filled with lotus seed paste and a hard egg yolk in the middle is a must try during the festival. There is an abundance of mooncakes available on the market including icy mooncake, ice cream mooncake, chocolate mooncake, as well as low fat and sugar free options. Popular mooncake brands in Hong Kong include Shangri-la, Kee Wah and Peninsula Hotel. In particular Peninsula Hotel's Spring Moon limited edition mooncakes are popular with scalpers who resell them at two to three times its retail value.
In Hong Kong, it has become one of the most important corporate gifting seasons and has become bigger than Christmas and Chinese New Year. It is an opportunity for businesses to say thank you for their client's business in the past year. A classic mid autumn corporate gift would include a fruit basket accompanied by a box of mooncakes. The classic fruit basket should include a variety of colourful tropical fruit including pomelo, dragon's fruit, kiwi, mangos, pears, grapes, grapefruit, naval oranges and Fuji apples.
Mid Autumn festival is a great time to visit Hong Kong to experience local traditions and folklore. If you are having business dealings in Asia, you should consider sending a traditional mid autumn basket to show your appreciation. Remember gifting is an important part of business culture in Asia.
